New discovery on this man (my ancestor and I'm sure many of you also descend from him)

Giacomo Martorana (md. 29 Apr 1629 Caterina Migliore in Carini)

He was born in Monreale, baptized the 6th of August 1606 to Vincenzo Martorana and his wife Angela Traficheri, who were married at Monreale 6 Jun 1604.

Vincenzo was baptized 5 Feb 1582 Monreale son of Giuseppe Martorana and his wife Giovanna Lo Bianco, who were married there 27 Feb 1576.

Angela Traficheri was baptized 13 Jul 1586 Monreale, daughter of Antonino Traficheri and his wife Milia Buzano, who were married 3 September 1570.

Giuseppe Martorana was born 1555 and died 21 April 1596 Monreale, son of Pietro Martorana and his wife Giovanna.

Giovanna Lo Bianco was the daughter of Silvestro Lo Bianco and his wife Francesca.

Antonino Traficheri was the son of Vito Traficheri and his wife Maria

Milia Buzano was the saughter of Stefano Buzano and his wife Giovanna

The records of Monreale are much more complete and give MUCH more information than the Carini records, especially when you get into the mid to late 1500s. They are also completely indexed by surname from the very beginning (1527). I have 7 families I am working on right now who went from Monreale to Carini. More to come as I find it!

Hi Jim,

I was curious where you had to go to access the Monreale Records. I was hoping that they might be on-line or do you have to order them from the CLDS?

Also, I know that you visited Carini in the past. Did you by any chance ever visit the cemetary(ies) there and if it is possible to retrieve any data from the gravesites/tombs that would pre-date the time of the first records recorded by the church? I don't know if those older sights were merely wooden markers but I would assume that some families of wealth may have had the resources to maintain more lasting memorials or was that mainly done through the use of vaults in the churches?

Also, are you familiar with the Palermo Archives and what type of data is maintained there? I am told that you must be an Italian citizen to access these records. Don't know if that is true or not.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Rick
