I came across some interesting info about this address - some of you may have seen this before but it is new to me.

821 Christian St. in Philly was also the address of Banco d'Italia, possibly acting as agent for the immigrants listing this as their 'going to' address.

238 Columbia Street in Brooklyn was, like 821 Christian Street, Philadelphia, a common immigrant destination. And like the Philadelphia address, it may have been a "going to" address provided by agents. I found a October 4, 1914 New York Times article that stated "A private banker's certificate has been ordered issued to Raphael Scotto of 238 Columbia Street, Brooklyn; permanent capital, $15,000." Thus, there was a banking connection to the Brooklyn address as well.

It looks like well over 100 immigrants from Carini that appear in the Ellis Island spreadsheet listed the 238 Columbia Street address as their destination.

I remember walking past 238 Columbia St. many times as a kid. It was between Union & President Streets. We did all our shopping at the street markets (pushcarts) on Union and then walked along Columbia to the Poultry market on President. I can't, for the life of me, remember what the front of that building looked like. I guess I'm over-the-hill officially now...lol.

It's probably gone now anyway...just like 11-13 Columbia. Tore most of those buildings down in the '50's to put in the BQE. My Grandfather was the Super at 11-13 and there was a gentlemen who lived across the hall who was some kind of agent. I'm not sure but I think his name was Ravenatti, over 70 years ago and most of the faces have faded away.

Wish I'd paid more attention....sigh.
