BY TODAY STANDARDS IT WOULD CERTAINLY BE CONSIDERED A CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
HOWEVER, THIS IS HOW THE TRUCK DRIVERS OF THEN
THE (HORSE CARRIAGE OPERATORS) PAST THEIR TIME AT THEIR LUNCH BREAK.
THEY WOULD PLACE THE CARRIAGES WHEELS IN A DEEP DITCH OF ABOUT 3 OR 4 FEET AND LOAD UP THE CARRIAGES WITH BOXES FULL OF LEMONS.
THE CRUELTY WAS IN WHIPPING THE HORSES TO SEE WHO COULD PULL THE CARRIAGE OUT OF THE DITCH FIRST. BETS WERE ALSO PLACED.
CRUEL BUT TRUE.

Thanks for sharing that, I'm sure back in the day animals were abused severely.
